Module Aims
To examine the nature and scope of palliative care in relation to life limiting illnesses.
Content Summary
The module is a text based distance learning course supported via distance learning. It will explore issues pertaining to palliative care via case studies and a narrative approach. Specific issues that are pertinent to the delivery of effective palliative and end of life care include the origins and development of palliative care and the scope of palliative care within the UK and Europe. The factors that can impact upon palliative care services and therefore an individual’s journey will be explored in relation to communication skills, and the impact of professional, ethical and legal issues upon individuals in clinical decision making. These can include issues such as euthanasia, and the right to die, and the use of advanced directives while considering the issue of capacity and choice.
