Module Aims

The aim of this module is to:

• Examine how current legislation / Codes of Practice / policies and procedures underpins and supports safeguarding of children and young people.
• Critically reflect on, and evaluate strategies used to empower children and young people to uphold their rights.
Discuss the importance of supporting children and young people’s well-being and resilience.

Content Summary

This module will examine the UK and Welsh Legislative Framework for service provision for safeguarding children and young people. Types and indicators of abuse will be identified and examined. Assessment of risk and referral policies and procedures will be discussed. This will proceed to exploring theoretical perspectives, policies and procedures and research into child abuse, and to include the wider issues surrounding child protection (e-technologies, radicalisation, trafficking and extremism), and enable students to reflect on these. Following this, strategies to support children and young people (child centred approach, voice of the child, anti-bullying week, Flying Start, the importance of multi-agency work). The importance of taking opportunities to demonstrate how resilience is developed and emotional well-being is supported with children and young people
