Module Aims

To enable the student to gain skills, knowledge and experience relevant to the selected industry, by undertaking a period of supervised work experience, or a combination of placement and ‘live’ project.

To enable the student to critically reflect on the learning achieved during the placement/’live’ project

Content Summary

This module provides an opportunity to undertake a work placement relevant to the subject area. In recognition of the difficulty in securing work placements in creative subjects, it is possible to fulfil the learning outcomes by a combination of work placement (minimum 50 hours) and a simulated work place experience; a ‘live’ project. The work placement may take the form of an unpaid secondment, current part time or full time employment, or previous employment. In all cases, the placement must be relevant to the subject area studied and it can be undertaken in a block or more flexibly as necessary. Where the student is undertaking a combined work placement and ‘live’ project, the student, tutor and an industry professional, will negotiate a brief to be undertaken within the usual place of study. Students will demonstrate competence in the key skills acquired and learning outcomes achieved during the work placement/ ‘live’ project in a Personal Reflective Diary (PRD) and reflective report.

Assessment Criteria

Assessment Category Assessment Type Description Duration Word Count Weight (%) Best of? Pass Mark
Asynchronous Assessment Self Reflective Assessment 1 A reflective report on the learning achieved during the work experience and/or ‘live’ project 0 2250 15 No 40
Asynchronous Assessment Practical Coursework 1 (Asynch) EITHER Work experience totalling approximately 500 hrs, evidenced by a reference from the employer AND a Personal Reflective Diary (PRD) including a report on the company profile, the roles and responsibilities of staff within that company and the work placement role undertaken. (Total approximately 1,250 words) OR A combination of work placement (minimum 50 hours) evidenced by a reference from the employer AND a Personal Reflective Diary (PRD) including a report on the company profile, the roles and responsibilities of staff within that company and the work placement role undertaken. (Total approximately 1,250 words) AND a portfolio of practical subject specific material generated during a ‘live’ project. The precise breakdown of the assessment will be individually negotiated and is dependent on the duration of the work placement. For example, a placement of 50 hours, would trigger a ‘live’ project of equivalent effort to an 11,000 word essay. 0 N/A 85 No 40
