Module Aims

1. To develop skills in Engineering Surveying and an awareness of the latest equipment and techniques in Civil Engineering Surveying, so as to be able to carry out the various aspects of Surveying that relate to the work of the Civil Engineer.

2. To provide an introduction to the theory and technology applicable to highway and traffic engineering, so as to be able to apply fundamental highway and traffic engineering principals to a sound knowledge base for the innovative application in the design of sustainable highway and traffic schemes.

Content Summary

Engineering Surveying
Tests and adjustments (where appropriate) of surveying instruments.
Survey Control - Traversing, GPS.
Detail/Topograhical Surveys - Production of survey plans.
Setting Out - The importance of planning and preparation in setting out, maintenance of site records and survey control on site. Calculations and setting out for horizontal, vertical and transitional curves. Discussion of setting out techniques for a range of Civil Engineering jobs. New developments in Engineering Surveying.

Monitoring movement: An overview of the importance of monitoring and the various methods and techniques involved.
Field Course - Application of the techniques and knowledge gained in the module. Undertaking control, topographic and level surveys with subsequent setting out exercises, including on-site calculations. Computation of Field Course data. Submission of a written Report.

Highway Design
Traffic engineering, Highway planning and management - Traffic surveys; Traffic growth patterns and forecasting; Road safety.
Highway link design; Design standards; Percentile speed and design speed; Sight distances; Highway capacity; Horizontal and vertical alignment designs; Materials and materials site investigations leading to pavement design; Hydrological and hydraulic considerations in highway drainage design; Introduction to design of road junctions; Computer Applications.
Highway construction and maintenance; Road condition surveys; Construction and construction plant for earthworks, pavement, drainage, surface dressing and maintenance; Road furniture.

LO1 Demonstrate the ability to solve engineering surveying problems by analysing available data and to carry out a range of basic surveying activities that may be required of a Civil Engineer on site.
LO2 Demonstrate understanding and ability to solve highway and traffic engineering problems carrying out designs for sustainable highway and traffic schemes, based on sound knowledge of engineering principals, codes of practice and analytical skills.
