Module Aims

To consolidate and expand upon the basics of integrated Structural Analysis and Design, preparing technically appropriate solutions to simple structures that are safe and fit for purpose, within the context of the current climate emergency.

Content Summary

The module content will extend the knowledge and skill in the principles of Structural Analysis, as well as industrially relevant UK design standards.

Enable students to understand and design elements of structures in bending and axial forces, in readiness for a possible year in industry and level 6 conceptual module.

Students will undertake a variety of learning activities that will encourage them to consider structural analysis and design within the wider context of construction and start to judge the governing factors that an engineer can influence the design.

Use practical work to enhance the understanding of theory.

Analysis

The continuation of structural analysis, such as:

  • Statically determinate and statically indeterminate members to obtain shear force and bending moment diagrams.
  • Shear stress distribution.
  • Combined stresses.

Design

Continuation in the design of building structures to current UK design standards including:

  • Laterally unrestrained beams.
  • Bending and axial members.
