Module Aims
To develop an advanced knowledge of the relationship between physical activity and the prevention, treatment and management of chronic disease conditions and mental and physical well-being. The module is also designed to develop students critical awareness of the design and implementation of physical activity public health policy.
Content Summary
• History and principles of physical activity and exercise; physical activity recommendations; physical fitness, morbidity and mortality
• Relevant epidemiological and methodological issues in physical activity research
• Physical activity and fitness among different age, sex and ethnic groups
• Health inequalities in the context of physical activity and sedentary behaviour
• The biological effects of physical activity and the mechanisms of disease prevention and treatment, for example:
o Obesity
o Diabetes
o Cardiovascular disease
o Bone health/Musculoskeletal disorders
o Respiratory disease
• The psychological and mental effects of physical activity and exercise
• The effects of physical activity on children and adolescents
• The effects of physical activity on elderly populations
• The risks and hazards of physical activity/exercise
