Module Aims

Provide an opportunity for students to observe and participate in work-based professional environments.

• To brief the student on their responsibilities before the work based learning commences. This will involve a learning contract which defines the University's expectations and assessment criteria
• The work provider will be required to complete the University's Health and Safety checklist and ensure that
• students are familiar with the content of the work based log.
• To ensure the quality of the placement is properly managed
• To agree a programme of work based learning with the work based supervisor and student.
• To support the student in the achievement of their Learning Objectives
• To visit the students and provide support
• To establish a work based forum from the list of approved work based provider.
• Present real problems for the student to overcome which will enhance their professional and vocational learning and inform their own everyday practice.

The Employers (Work Based Supervisor) Responsibilities
• To provide induction training including instruction in Health and Safety aspects of the work.
• To advise student on issues on confidentiality
• To provide the student (by discussion with the academic supervisor) a clearly defined programme to enable the
• student to meet the learning objectives.

The Students Responsibilities:
• To attend required induction sessions
• To attend the workplace for the required periods
• To work in a safe manner and abide by the rules of the workforce
• To complete the required learning outcomes/assessment
• Complete the work based logbook
• Provide both self-assessed personal development journal evidence and a mentor’s report

Content Summary

The module will enable the student to engage in critical reflection on their learning through work experience.

To this end the module team and/or student will identify an organisation(s) that is able to provide 140 hours of
work experience: the organisation should be relevant to the student's field of study.

This module will facilitate the development of Personal Development Planning (PDP) through the delivery of the key skills identified in the module descriptor.
