Module Aims

The aim of this module is to:

Introduce students to the organisation and nature of social work with the UK including multidisciplinary contexts.

Explore the concept of structural inequality, and other forms of discrimination and how to overcome them.

Consider the impact of social work intervention on service users and carers.

Introduce the concept of outcome focused assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation and their relationships to theoretical perspectives

Content Summary

This module will provide a review of the historical roots of modern social work practice and will provide a basis for understanding contemporary issues, such as outcome focused assessment, risk assessment and risk management, vulnerability and decision making. This module introduces students to social work practice in various settings in a diverse society. Students will be introduced to the relevant social process that contributes to inequality and marginalisation, such as poverty, disablement, poor health and sources of disadvantage. There will be a particular focus on these issues within a Welsh context. The impact of Welsh policy and legislation on social work practice and process will be explored Important concepts of empowerment, anti-discriminatory practice and anti-oppressive practice will be covered in relation to social work practice and the impact of social work practice on individuals and families will be considered.
