Module Aims

The module aims to provide a critical and holistic overview of the strategic financial management of an organisation, from both internal and external stakeholder viewpoints. It will enable students to critically appraise key aspects of corporate governance and corporate social responsibility. It will then develop students’ knowledge, understanding and critical evaluation of accounting terminology, theoretical frameworks and the main principles of financial accounting, management accounting and financial management. Students will be encouraged to practically apply - and critically evaluate - techniques such as financial statement analysis, investment appraisal and budgeting in a strategic managerial context.

Content Summary

Objectives of financial management including, financial and non-financial objectives, corporate governance and corporate social responsibility and financial terminology.

Strategic Financial Decisions including the relevance and interrelatedness of the three financial management decisions, sources of finance, gearing and capital structure and managing risk

Financial statement analysis (FSA) including, the role, purpose and content of financial statements; the use of accounting and economic ratios; Strengths and limitations of FSA.

Capital investment appraisal including, key terminology and techniques including non-discounted and discounted methods and dealing with scarce resources and risk in capital appraisal.

Budgetary management and control including, approaches to budgeting and performance management, behavioural aspects affecting budgetary management and control, and decision making around the allocation of resources.
