Module Aims

To critically analyse psychological theories in order to enable students to understand psychological consequences of acute and critical illness, explore various interventions and integrate these into personal practice.

Content Summary

Teaching will enable the student to critically explore the psychological implications of acute and critical illness for themselves as HCPs, individuals, family, and the multidisciplinary team. Consideration will be given to the psychological effects according to the level of care patients receive i.e. level 1, 2 or 3. Areas to be covered will be those such as psychological impact of drugs, environment, sleep and interventions, communication, anxiety, stress, responding to challenging behaviours, crisis, body image, traumatic death, unconscious patient, post-traumatic stress disorder, exploring attitudes, beliefs and culture, use of critical care diaries, long term consequences of acute hospitalisation and multidisciplinary support options available.
