1. To critically evaluate theories used to deal with community issues.

2. To critically evaluate the effectiveness of official responses to community issues.

3. To critically evaluate the role of partnerships in dealing with community issues.

Content Summary

Alcohol and its impact upon society; the financial and societal costs of government policies regarding alcohol sales policies; Alcohol and anti-social behaviour and its impact upon fear of crime;
Case studies of dealing with alcohol driven problems within communities

Illegal drug use and its impact upon communities; the 'link' between illegal drugs misuse and crime.
Official response to illegal drug use and alternative strategies for critical examination

Poverty and its impact on community, historical context of poverty within certain communities; government fiscal policies and their impact upon such communities; critical examination of crime rates within such communities,
Defining relative poverty, impact upon public services, Government response to poverty

Victims of crime within communities; critical examination of the victims charter; fear of crime and vulnerable people,
The treatment of vulnerable people within communities; discussion surrounding these types of victims; The role of volunteers and victims of crime. Victim surveys; the Victim Support Service.
