Module Aims

To demonstrate critically appraisal of the decision making processes as applied to community nursing practice.

Content Summary

Introduction to decision making: defining decision-making, what is decision making, where decisions are made and who makes the decisions?
How are decisions made: Stages of decision making; decision –making theories; decision models; problem solving; risk and uncertainty; context of healthcare decisions for example, culture, power, politics, policies and resources and services; influencing factors; ethical decision making; reflective decision making; experience and intuition in decision making. The role of information systems and support systems in the decision making process. Empowerment, independence, multi-disciplinary, multi-agency context and, collaborative clinical decision making.
