Explore the complexities of disasters across the disaster cycle from a local to a global level.
To appreciate the positive contribution that health and social care provision can make across the disaster cycle.
Content Summary
Analysis of the risks associated with natural catastrophic events. For example earthquake, landslide, volcano, coastal and riparian flooding, windstorms, drought, extremes of temperature.
Analysis of the risks associated with man-made disasters. For example technological disasters, environmental degradation & pollution, public health emergencies, CBRNE terrorist activities (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive).
The nature of disaster vulnerability. For example poverty & social exclusion, child and maternal health, the unique position of the older person.
Local, national and supra-national systems for disaster mitigation, preparedness & response.
The role of health and social care in responding to the needs of disaster victims and disaster affected communities. For example, principles of focussed needs assessment, prioritisation and decision making, community based disaster risk reduction strategies, strengthening of health and social care services/health
