Module Aims
To develop students in depth understanding of the relevant factors to be taken into account when providing suitable healthcare to people with learning disabilities who present with complex health needs
Content Summary
A case study approach focusing on a number of profiles of people with learning disabilities (who have additional support needs in areas such as profound and multiple disabilities, autistic spectrum disorder, mental health, challenging behaviour, old age, childhood issues and a specific genetic syndrome) will be utilised. Other areas which will be covered include complexity in health care, applied research, vulnerability and safeguarding, prioritising care, care pathways, care packages, health rationing, quality of life, transitions, critical practice, multi agency working, decision making, best interests (capacity & consent), prioritising needs, advocating, leadership, legislation, outcome measures and case/care coordination. Exploration of the professional role of the learning disabilities nurse. Application of research to learning disabilities practice.\r
