Module Aims
To investigate and demonstrate animal management techniques.
To justify and apply management of animal accommodation.
Content Summary
Animal management: consideration of animal behaviour, physiological state, dangerous species in selection of handling technique, correct restraint methods, use of PPE and handling equipment, preparation of animals for transit, hazards and risk assessments, legislative and welfare guidelines.
Animal care: assessment of animals’ physical and mental condition, appreciation of species, breed and individual characteristics, routine health care and stock tasks, planning diets, feeding behaviour and feeding regimes, maintenance of condition, attention to welfare requirements.
Accommodation requirements: function, species specificity, siting, space, materials, ventilation, drainage, temperature, hygiene, safety, security, substrate/bedding, furnishings, legislation, provision of accommodation (design, preparation, maintenance and appraisal of animal accommodation appropriate to the industry)
