Module Aims
To provide an understanding of the physiological and medical issues associated with access to physical activity among special populations.
To provide underpinning knowledge to design and evaluate appropriate exercise programmes, suitable for individual needs among a diverse range of special population groups.
Content Summary
The module introduces the concept of participation in regular physical activity for a range of targeted special populations discussing the ways in which exercise may benefit these individuals.
An overview of the types of health-related interventions including the rationale for such schemes with direct links to current trends and physical activity participation rates. Health, safety and legal considerations of physical activity interventions will be discussed in detail including the requirement of screening procedures, medical consent issues, confidentiality issues and the client informed consent procedures. Application of concepts developed within the fields of exercise physiology and exercise prescription associated with the physiological benefits and limitations of regular physical activity and exercise programming.
A synopsis of topics included in this module may include:
Exercise, physical activity & health. Fitness assessment issues related to special population groups and design of programmes for special populations such as: individuals with cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, musculoskeletal disorders and mobility problems, respiratory disorders, mental disorders.
Design and evaluation of appropriate physical activity programmes for targeted groups. Overview of the concept of active living discussing the available options for general physical activity participation including comparisons of the associated energy expenditure and metabolic values of activities. Practical activities shall incorporate health screening, assessing exercise intensity and appropriate exercise techniques and prescriptions.
The theoretical aspects of the module, will allow students to assist in, the planning and delivery of physical activity consultations, for a range of both mainstream and special population groups within the health and fitness environment. Topics of discussion will include the general health benefits of regular physical activity based on national guidelines and the current recommendations.
The module has been benchmarked against National Occupational Standards Units D463 (Design, Manage and Adapt an Exercise and Physical Activity Programme with Referred Patients) and D464 (Instruct Exercise and Physical Activities with Referred Patients) and D459 (Evaluate Exercise and Physical Activity programmes).
Students with appropriate pre-requisite vocational awards may be eligible to undertake the CIMSPA Level 3 Exercise Referral award within this module.
