Module Aims

To allow students to develop a systematic and comprehensive understanding of Information Technology Law through a critical and evaluative analysis of relevant principles and concepts.

Content Summary

  • This module will follow two main themes: development of the internet and protection of information.
  • The first part of the module will focus on the development of the internet; regulation; domain names; registration and rights; infringements of domain names; relationship of domain names and trade mark law and copyright and patent protection for computer software and hardware.
  • The latter part of the module will consider the protection of information; the status of information; protection of trade secrets; action for breach of confidence; e-commerce legislation; distance selling; encryption protection; electronic signatures; jurisdictional issues raised by the internet; liability of internet service providers; database copyright; database protection and meta tags.
