Module Aims

To enable module participants to critically appraise the value of a multidisciplinary approach and evidence based knowledge related to people with diabetes.

Content Summary

Anatomy and physiology, aetiology, incidence and prevalence of diabetes mellitus. Approaches to caring for people with diabetes: - treatments (including pharmacology), support, involvement of people in their own care, education, psycho-social and lifestyle issues and the organisation of care and the management of change. International, national and local initiatives in the treatment and care of people with diabetes. Complications of diabetes: reducing risk and managing short and long-term complications. Caring for specific client groups including children. The evidence base for care.

LO2 To be able to critically evaluate the care of a person with diabetes, demonstrating synthesis of diabetes knowledge and an<br />understanding of the complexity of care delivery.
LO3 To be able to provide a teaching session on diabetes and demonstrate critical evaluation in relation to a relevant aspect of diabetes care (NMC Standard 13.6).
