Module Aims

The focus of this module is to provide students with the basic concepts of what is required to learn, perform and coach fundamental movement/ multi skills at an introductory level when working with children. The module will introduce students to theories of physical literacy, fundamental movement skills (FMS), long- term athlete development (LTAD) and coaching the whole child and how these can be applied practically when working with children. The module will enable the student  to  acquire  the  skills  and  competencies 

necessary for success within the sport placements. 

Content Summary

This module will be taught through the medium of practical sport and theoretical issues relating to coaching children. The following theoretical principles of the fundamentals of coaching children will be covered: 

  • Physical Literacy 

  • Fundamental and Functional Movement Skills 

  • Coaching the Child 

An introduction to the role of the coach in delivering session that is holistic in the development of young children through  exciting,  challenging  and well structured environments. Focusing on the physical, technical, tactical, mental, personal and social aspects of sport. 

  • Practical coaching sessions delivered through an FMS / multi skill theme. 

  • Planning, delivering and evaluating coaching session aimed at primary school aged children that are aligned to the national curriculum. 

  • Managing  a  safe,  effective  and  ethical environment for sporting activities.
