Module Aims
This module is designed to analyse the role of the PE teacher and sports coach, both within Primary and Secondary education and offer an insight into the contemporary initiatives that focus on School Sport provision with an emphasis on Government involvement and/or intervention. In addition, the module will increase student’s awareness and understanding of the factors that impact on and limit young people’s participation in PE and school sport. Introduce the concept of Physical Literacy and its importance to PE and school sport and the Health and
Well Being strand of the Curriculum for Wales.
Content Summary
On completion of the module students will demonstrate an in-depth awareness of Physical Education and School Sport. Areas of study, will include: PE and school sport policy, Primary/Secondary school participation, barriers to participation in school sport, transition periods in school sport, becoming the primary/secondary PE teacher, PE and school sport initiatives (Wales and the UK), partnerships in PE and school sport, Physical Literacy, the role of the Sports Coach in physical education, the role of extra-curricular school sport. The module will be delivered via a combination of practical classes, workshops, and seminar sessions, supported by independent learning and the use of blackboard.
