Module Aims

The module aims to introduce students to the concept of community sports development. This will involve an examination of the success of initiatives complemented by an overview of the challenges faced by specific population target groups. After successfully completing this module participants will be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of the principles of community sports development with a key emphasis on determining the barriers to participation for various target groups. 

Content Summary

This will involve an examination of the success of initiatives complemented by an overview of the challenges faced by specific population target groups. 

Underpinning principles of community sports development including: 

  • Definition of sports development 

  • Engaging the community assessing community needs developing the community through sport community networks developing sport for all 

  • Barriers of participation, including cultural, social, economic, historical, educational, physical. 

  • Developing sports partnership agreements at a local, regional and national level 

  • Sports development planning: local, regional and national 

  • Analysing the effectiveness of community sports development programmes 

  • Planning activity programmes for various populations including ethnic minority groups, senior citizens, persons with disabilities 

  • This module includes mandatory formative assessment activities, to support students learning and development prior to summative tasks
