Module Aims
To provide the student with an understanding of three areas within psychology; social, abnormal and developmental psychology including historical changes, a critical review of the research and theories and their application to real life.
Content Summary
The psychology module is designed to provide the student with an overview of three of the most popular and relevant areas of the subject matter. This will include the major psychological approaches, the research methods used and a critical awareness of the subject matter.
Social Psychology: how do biological and psychological altruism differ; the situational determinants of altruism; theories of aggression and their practical implications and social factors influencing aggression; alternative theories relating to prejudice, discrimination and relative success of proposals to reduce them. Social Psychology: what is social psychology; areas of research within social psychology including pro-and anti-social behaviour and social groups; the ethics of social psychology research; methods of social psychology research.
Abnormal Psychology: analysis of medical and psychological models of abnormality; major psychopathological conditions; the usefulness of mental health statistics; and the differences between alternative explanations of mental illness.
Developmental Psychology: development of sociability, attachment formation and factors affecting it, and the long term effects on children resulting from early experiences. To enable the learner to understand the factors affecting and theories related to development from adolescence to ageing.
