Module Aims

To develop an understanding of principles of timber and masonry structure construction. To synthesize the principles of mechanics of materials and structural analysis, and apply them to the design of masonry and timber structures. To demonstrate how analysis methods are interpreted by the current British and European design codes of practice, and to introduce students to the implications of design to Eurocodes

Content Summary

Timber and masonry construction
Timber and masonry units as a structural materials
The mechanical properties of timber and masonry materials
Introduction to Eurocode 5 design of timber structures and Eurocode 6 - Design of masonry structures.
Basis of structural analysis
Timber member design (e.g., beam, tension member, compression member)
The use of various connections and their design and the fire design of timber structures
Properties of masonry units and mortar and masonry.Design of masonry members for axial loading, flexure, shear with reinforcement, and flexure and axial load.
