Module Aims

To equip students with the theoretical knowledge to critically evaluate various approaches to strategy and leadership in the public service context and the practical skills to lead and manage services effectively.

Content Summary

Strategic decision making in the public sector, rational and emergent strategy, engaging stakeholders, political awareness, different approaches to leadership, political awareness and leadership,  strategy and leadership witin different political contexts and levels, leadership (transactional and transformational), public and collaborative leadership, leadership and performance in the public sector and future thinking and scenario planning. Reflections on effective management and leadership.

Within this module Action Learning Sets will be introduced and utilised to help resolve problematic issues via peer support and
discussion. Action learning posits that we may well already have enough knowledge and what we need are new ways of applying what we know to new situations. The emphasis is on reflecting, deciding to experiment with new action, taking action and, having
moved on to a different place, starting the cycle again.
