Module Aims

To enable students to understand and critically analyse the management of change within a particular context and to develop recommendations for the effective implementation of change in the future.

Students will typically:

- Prepare, implement and evaluate strategic change within a familiar organisation.
- Establish a business need and obtain agreement for the development of a high-level business case.
- Develop and evaluate a range of high-level business case options for change, and provide a justification for the choice of preferred option with reference to clear criteria, in liaison with relevant stakeholders.

- Develop an agreed strategy for change using a clear methodological approach.
- Communicate, implement, manage and evaluate at least part of the agreed strategic change strategy, or plan how this is to be done.
- Adopt an analytical and critical approach to a range of academic models, concepts and theories and demonstrate an explicit linkage between the change management strategy and academic literature.
- Make Assertions and develop arguments in a rigorous, balanced and objective ways.

Content Summary

The module includes the following:

- Identifying the internal and external drivers for change, including Force Field Analysis and tools and techniques to monitor the internal, sector and macro environments.

- A critical analysis of seminal Change Management theory.

- An examination of behavioural, psychodynamic and cognitive approaches to understanding Individuals and Change

- An exploration of the Individual, Group and Organisational reasons why Change fails and Overcoming Resistance

- The application of tools and techniques for appraising different options for change and measuring impact, including SAFe criteria.
