Module Aims

This module aims to equip student veterinary nurses with the practical knowledge enabling them to handle, control and restrain a range of companion animal species, in both every day and a veterinary setting.

The student will investigate the essentials of clinical nutrition, best-practice accommodation and companion species behaviour.

The module also aims to build knowledge of breeding physiology, techniques and selection, including animal identification, with an overview of genetics. The essentials of obstetrics and neonatal care are also explored.

Content Summary

The content of this module will provide student veterinary nurses with the practical skills and legally, well-informed knowledge to both house patients correctly in the veterinary hospital and to educate clients on how best to care for pets, and includes:

Knowledge of animal welfare laws and how they are applied to practical handling and husbandry

Establishment and maintenance of patients within their hospital accommodation: observing minimum legal requirements, assessing clinical nutrition needs, consideration of sustainability and carrying out basic grooming techniques.

Introduction to the disciplines of One Health, Clinical Governance, Quality Improvement and the Clinical Audit is relation to companion animal and wildlife handling and hospitalisation.

Exploration of the principles of breeding and genetics to include: reproductive physiology, breeding cycles, mating and assisted mating and principles of genetic inheritance

Identification of companion animal species to include breed, colour, markings, owner registration, passports, DNA testing

Confident application of the essentials of obstetric and neonatal care: intra-partum care, management and nursing of the neonate; for canine, feline and exotic species.
