Module Aims

The module aims to introduce students to the concept of community sports development, with a specific focus upon football. This will involve an examination of the success of initiatives complemented by an overview of the challenges faced by specific population target groups.

After successfully completing this module participants will be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of the principles of community sports development with a key emphasis on determining the barriers to participation for various target groups.

The module will also explore the importance of developing, maintaining, and improving sports partnership arrangements within the community to enhance grassroots football participation.

Content Summary

Underpinning principles of community sports development including Engaging the community; Assessing community needs
Developing the community through sport; Community networks; School sports development; Developing sport for all; Links with key organisations: Football League Trust, FA, Sports Councils; Knowledge of the participation profile of different societal groups.

Barriers to participation: cultural, social, economic, historical, educational, physical.
