Module Aims

To critically evaluate current research and development relating to (a) theories of effective learning and development and (b) the effective management of these.

To understand and evaluate the ways in which training can contribute to effective leadership and management to secure sustainable improvement within the company.

To critically examine the design and delivery of training to ensure that training functions are relevant, accurate and fit for purpose.

To examine the ways in which training can inspire learners to put their new knowledge and skills into action and how innovative approaches can engage people within the business at all levels, inside and outside the training rooms.

To understand how to evaluate training programmes and to seek creatively to adapt design and delivery in response to such evaluations.

To equip participants with the ability to plan, execute and evaluate a research project of relevance to the company, and to measure its impact within the context of both the Learning and Development function and the wider business.

Content Summary

There will be three key components to the module:

1. TRAINING SESSIONS / CPD Portfolio

Participants will be expected to attend all training sessions that are planned and delivered by their company or designated external provider, in addition to sessions planned and delivered by USW.

Participants must formally document their own learning and development based on these CPD sessions.

All CPD sessions will be accompanied by a pack; each pack will contain a learner journey / package guide, as well as a copy of all training aids and materials.

CPD sessions will often include an activity which the participant will use to develop their learning and offer opportunities to evidence how the training session and associated tasks have enabled them to develop their leadership and management skills and achieve the learning outcomes of the module.

2. TRAINING PORTFOLIO

Participants will keep a portfolio of the training they have delivered during the period of their registration on the programme. This will include details of planning, materials, and any assessment activities that have been used. Participants will also keep a log of self-evaluations on the sessions delivered, which will include reflection on how their leadership role within the Learning and Development function has developed. Formal feedback will be given on four training sessions.

3. RESEARCH PROJECT

The research project is an opportunity for participants to take or share the lead in developing a designated area of training. Participants are asked to identify an area within Learning and Development where they can make an impact on the wider business. The organisation will support them in this activity. Participants will submit their rationale for their chosen investigation along with the training package / materials, initiative or intervention will be submitted for assessment. They will also offer a critical account of the research and development process. There will be an opportunity to present their research project to Senior Managers for feedback at the highest level in the company prior to formal submission.
