Module Aims

The module aims to allow individuals involved in caring for people receiving palliative care to develop a greater understanding of the principles of palliative and end of life care. The module aims also to explore the importance of effective communication within the context of a therapeutic carer/ patient relationship.

Content Summary

The module will include an understanding and clarification of what is commonly used terminology such as palliation, terminal phase and end of life. Also to understand the basic principles of symptom control to include pain, nausea and vomiting, nutrition, oral care, fatigue, Gastrointestinal symptoms, shortness of breath and agitation/distress. The themes of diagnosing dying and the supportive role of the carer in relation to culture, relation and spiritual needs. The impact of grief, loss and bereavement will be explored while including own experiences and awareness to underpin discussion/reflection.
