Module Aims
To gain an interdisciplinary knowledge base and understanding about the developing child in relation to sport.
To gain an insight into why movements change by exploring the effects of individual, environment, and task elements on the motor development and skill acquisition process.
To consider how the growth and maturation process affects sports performance,
Examine the physiological and anatomical differences in infants, children, and adolescents and consider how these differences affect sports performance including the protocols, procedures, and ethics of training children for sport.
Introduce students to theories of physical literacy, fundamental movement skills (FMS), long-term athlete development (LTAD), and coaching the whole child and how these can be applied practically when working with children.
Give students the basic knowledge and understanding about coaching children and the pathways of development. Particular attention will be paid to developing communication and organisational skills so that the individual may delivery safe and effective coaching sessions to children.
Content Summary
This module will focus on the theoretical issues relating to coaching children and youth and develop a knowledge base and understanding about the developing child in relation to sport. It will introduce students to the role of the coach in delivering session that are holistic in the development of young children through exciting, challenging, and well-structured environments. Focusing on the physical, technical, tactical, mental, personal, and social aspects of sport.
Students may examine the following topics within the module:
Stages of growth and maturation
Motor skill development
Integration of skills and techniques in coaching according to maturation & development theory
Develop coaching strategies to improve physical literacy and fundamental movement skills.
Coaching the whole child
Learning through play
Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD)
Structures and pathways in youth sport
Talent identification and performance sport
Physical activity, health, and obesity
Managing a safe and ethical environment for sporting activities (Safeguarding, Risk assessment, codes of conducts health and safety procedures)
Behaviour management
Coaching Children and young people
Adapting activities/Inclusive coaching
