Module Aims

This Professional Practice and Employability (PPE) module provide students with real-world work experience within the context of Information Systems Development and Computer Programming. The module provides students with the opportunity to engage in a real-world application development process in which a non-trivial information system is developed through the cycle of project specification, analysis of requirements and system design, prototype implementation, and critical evaluation and reflection. It will also enable students to demonstrate their engagement in a professional work environment and enhance their ability to appraise their performance.

Content Summary

The module provides opportunities for students to demonstrate their engagement in a professional work environment via working in a group-based project; to demonstrate independent thinking and self-appraisal; to further develop investigative, time-management, team-working and presentation skills; and to further develop coding skills relevant to the modern application development workplace. On completion, teams will present, critique and defend the methods and outcomes of their project, critically reflecting on the development work undertaken and the nature of professional practice.

Taught content

  • Information system design and specification.
  • Front-end development and integration with a database back-end.
  • Collaborative programming and team working tools, techniques, and environments.

An introduction to other professional skills that might be required during industrial placement:

  • Project management and leadership.
  • Team building and team interactions.
  • Writing a professional CV.
  • Developing a professional digital presence.

PPE

  • Students will spend seventy hours conducting relevant work experience or live project.
  • Reflecting on the nature of professional practice.

Learning Outcomes

# Learning Outcome
LO1 To develop skills, experience, and professional practice in the specification, design and implementation of a functioning information system together with collaborative working tools.
LO2 To reflect on the nature of professional practice, not only in order to identify the gaps between current capabilities and expectations but also to reflect upon the way the work experiences contributed to professional abilities and to use this insight to inform future personal/professional development.
