Module Aims

Develop, understand and critically examine the strategic leadership theories, models, drivers and operations which facilitate personal, institutional and community change and the application of these concepts in public health.

Critically analyse and apply appropriate methodology and concepts for leading change in a multi-disciplinary team context with the specific aims to promote health, protect health, and achieve health improvement in diverse working contexts and to meet the dynamic challenges in these contexts.

Identify an area for change and apply decision making processes and criteria to prioritise a change, and debate appropriate leadership styles and strategies for success.

Introduction and background to the concept of leadership, definition, history, types, styles, attitudes and expectations of a leader. The meaning of competency, competency framework and features. Personality tests and relevance.

Critical analysis of different theories and models of leadership. Leadership vs Management. Differences between leadership styles and theories, personal reflection on leadership, analysing personality types and leadership styles. Theories and models of leadership in public health practice.

LO1 Demonstrate an in-depth critical understanding of fundamental leadership concepts, the role and contribution leadership in conceptualising, creating and inspiring innovation and practice in the multi-disciplinary facets of public health and effectively engage with prevailing issues, research, and debates in these areas.
LO2 Use a range of tools, mechanisms and frameworks in order to effectively lead public health change, working with key stakeholders to identify, prioritise, decide and strategically plan to lead diverse change and demonstrate a range of leadership skills and strategies in various scenarios to meet wider public competencies within leadership and leading change.
