Version 2
Valid From 01 Jul 2017
Valid To 31 Aug 2022

Module Aims

1. To allow the student to acquire appropriate graduate skills for Pharmaceutical Scientists and to further develop the students employability and professional practice skills (e.g. investigation/research, planning, organisation, record keeping, critical assessment, oral presentation and report writing) through conducting a major work-related project.

2. To enable students to critically reflect on their employability skills by participation in a series of employability workshops/events.

Content Summary

Project/Relevant Work Experience: Students will undertake an industry directed project/equivalent experience either individually or as a small team, as determined by the nature of the proposed project/employer.

Students may source their own practical project under direct supervision of a relevant industrial employer, with approval of USW, but must be engaged for a minimum of 4 weeks full time.

Students who undertake their project within the setting of USW will be required to work independently and safely on their work related project and undertake at least 80 hours of laboratory work. Direct supervisor-student contact should be approximately 24 hours per academic year.

Assessment of the project part of the module is via

1) a reflective journal/laboratory notebook

2) a dissertation tailored to the type of experience/project undertaken

3) a presentation

Employability and Graduate Skills: Through active participation in workshops and other employability activities, students will develop skills in effective job searching, networking, CV writing, applications and presentation of self (e.g., online presence, at interviews etc), in addition to identifying those skills most valued by employers in a given role and how they need meet these. In addition to an attendance component students are assessed by a portfolio of work.

Learning Outcomes

# Learning Outcome
LO1 Reflect on the nature of professional practice in pharmaceutical science (including demonstrating the capacity to logically and critically evaluate and present a wide range of information) and on the way the student's work related studies have contributed to their professional practice, and use this to both identify the gaps between the student's work related capabilities and industry expectations and develop future personal/professional development
LO2 Develop and critically appraise an action plan of the student's own experience and skills developed within the context of a graduate recruitment process and informed by their career plans and aspirations.
LO3 Use relevant information sources to plan and/or conduct work pertaining to a particular industry related problem/process, work safely, accurately and independently to meet the aims of the above, and communicate their experiences and findings through various media
