Module Aims
The aim of the module is for students to gain essential skills to improve their employability opportunities after graduating. ?
Content Summary
This module’s content reflects the fact that there is no specific occupation of sociologist, but that the discipline of
sociology is relevant to a diverse range of occupations. In recognition of this, the module focuses on three key employability factors:
1. The acquisition of generic employability skills and knowledge of the contemporary workplace. This may include topics such as CV building, contemporary recruitment processes, interview skills, and the use of social media.
2. Personal reflection and identification of skills, qualities and attributes and how these relate to different
occupational and workplace settings.
3. Seventy hours practical experience within an agreed placement tailored towards their particular interests and
aspirations. Students can include any training hours required for their placement towards the 70 hour total. In certain circumstances (e.g. an international placement) and with the agreement of the teaching team, students are able to complete their placement hours before formally enrolling on the module.
Students are offered the choice of three placement options:
1. A bespoke placement which reflects their particular career aspirations. The nature and content of the placement will be agreed through dialogue between the University’s placement officer, the student and the host organisation.
2. The opportunity to undertake a placement with a community development organisation. Opportunities here will
draw upon the relationship established with the local Community Voluntary Council and the development new relationships with other similar and appropriate organisations.
3. An international placement. Ordinarily the student will complete the placement in the preceding summer, though in exceptional circumstances will be able to complete it during term time.
Whilst students will receive support from the university’s placement officers, they are required to be actively involved in the planning and implementation.
