Module Aims

This module aims to assist students in developing foundational assessment and intervention strategies based on the science of behaviour analysis. Students will learn to ethically apply these strategies with various individuals with challenging behaviour. They also will learn to effectively communicate strategies and outcomes to both professionals and consumers.

Content Summary

Students will actively engage in behaviour analytic practice (minimum of 20 hours per week inclusive of supervision) aimed at developing the core competencies required by the most current version of Behaviour Analysis Certification Board Task List. Practice will occur either in USW’s Behaviour Analysis Clinic or in an approved, external placement. All work will be conducted under the supervision of a Board Certified Behaviour analyst and will include (but not be limited to):
• Identifying and operationally defining target behaviours
• Developing and implementing systems for recording and measuring behaviour
• Displaying behavioural data on graphs
• Conducting functional assessments and analyses
• Developing and implementing functional, appropriate, and ethical behaviour change plans
• Assessing the effectiveness of behaviour change plans using direct observation of
behaviour and single case research designs
• Planning for and providing supports for system maintenance
• Assessing generalization and maintenance of behaviour change

Learning Outcomes

# Learning Outcome
LO1 Identify behaviour problems and describe their topography and aetiology in accordance with behaviour analytic theory.
LO2 Effectively and ethically employ behaviour analytic assessment and intervention strategies to help individuals acquire behaviour and to replace challenging behaviour.
LO3 Use research-based methods to evaluate the outcomes of interventions and communicate those outcomes to professionals and consumers, both in written and verbal formats.
LO4 Demonstrate how the core competencies delineated by the professional body can be incorporated into professional<br />practice.

Assessment Criteria

Assessment Category Assessment Type Description Duration Word Count Weight (%) Best of? Pass Mark
Synchronous Onsite Practical Assessment Work Placement 1 Supervisors will provide weekly (summative) evaluations of student performance and communicate these to students during supervision meetings. Supervisors will then consider supervision feedback across the module (in collaboration with other supervisors, if appropriate) to determine an aggregate mark at the end of the module. Please see Appendix 3 for evaluation form. 0 N/A 70 No 50
Asynchronous Assessment Self Reflective Assessment 1 Students will provide a reflective summary of their experiences on placement, in which they evaluate their strengths and areas for development. 0 2000 20 No 50
