Module Aims
The aim of this module is to:
Enable students to gain the fundamental academic and research building blocks required to embark on a successful University experience, whilst enabling realistic application to the subject area.
Introduce students to a broad grounding in literature searching, literature review, data collection, methodological approach, data analysis / interpretation and ethical practice that will increase their choice and capacity to engage in future research activity.
Help students to identify individual learning styles, introduce academic formats, referencing and useful available resources such as the virtual learning environment.
Support individuals to begin to develop a critical and analytical approach to their work and identify areas for personal development.
Content Summary
This module is designed to introduce individuals to academic and research skills required at level 4 to underpin their further studies. The content enables understanding of individual ways of learning and receiving support and guidance for the development and enhancement of work-related skills such as time management, action planning, personal development planning, IT and effective written and oral communication. Furthermore, research skills are an increasingly necessary part of the workplace as people require more information to adapt to changing roles in society.
This module aims to introduce the main approaches to research and to enable students to recognise the most appropriate methodology to adopt when investigating particular research questions. It will also introduce them to the most appropriate analytic tools and develop their skills in using such tools.
Academic Skills will address: Understanding individual learning styles and how to apply this effectively. Planning and structuring written work, reports and presentations. Producing appropriate academic pieces of work, namely essays, reports, portfolios, and presentations. Referencing a range of sources using the Harvard referencing System in line with the University guidelines Techniques for note taking, summarising and synthesising information from a range of sources. Engaging with the VLE for support, guidance and assessment opportunities. Using the library website to carry out relevant searches Research Skills will address: The use of search engines to carry out web searches.
An introduction to qualitative and quantitative research methods and their application to the workplace. Ethical considerations when carrying out work-based projects. Analysing findings and producing conclusions and recommendations. Presentation skills and the use of IT applications to produce visuals.
