Module Aims

The aim of the module is to:
• Reflect on the changing nature of childhood
• Explore theories of play
• Explain the value of play and leisure for children and young people

Content Summary

This module will examine the changing nature and the concept of childhood in relation to play and/or leisure. The value of play and leisure will be explored in depth, which will include theoretical perspectives and influences leading to a focus on contemporary childhood.
The different approaches to play will be debated regarding the role of free, structured and child-initiated play. Effective environments for purposeful play will be discussed, and current initiatives for play and leisure will be identified. Gender and cultural variations in play will also be explored.
