Module Aims

The module aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills they require to plan, prepare, instruct, and evaluate gym-based exercise programmes for children and apparently healthy, non-referred adults. 

The module has been benchmarked against Skills Active Units, Professional standards by CIMPSA. 

These are optional units that are required for the Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing and Level 3 Personal Trainer

Content Summary

The application of the principles and variables of fitness to the components of fitness. 

The importance of careful and thorough planning and preparation for physical activity. 

The needs and potential of the clients, including reasons for and barriers to participation in the appropriate activity. 

How to motivate clients to take part in exercise. 

Exercises that are safe and appropriate for clients, including alternatives to potentially harmful exercises; safe and effective alignment of exercise positions. 

How to plan to use a range of cardiovascular and resistance machines, free weights-barbells, dumbbells, collars, benches, protective floor & mats. 

The life-course of the musculoskeletal system (including bone) and its implications for working with young people, ante and postnatal women, disabled people and older people (i.e. tendon, ligament and BMD changes and their effect on posture and postural stability for all the above). 

Contraindications and key safety guidelines for working with older clients. 

Contraindications and key safety guidelines for working with ante and postnatal clients. 

How to give guidance to encourage special population clients* to follow the key safety guidelines and to discourage them from anything deemed to be potentially hazardous/contraindicated to enable them to take part in sessions 

The purpose and value of warm-up and cool-down. 

Why clients need to understand the purpose and value of warm-up and cool-down. 

Safe and effective warm-up and cool-down activities for gym-based exercise. 

A range of basic exercises that are safe and appropriate for clients; safe and effective alignment of exercise positions. 

A range of alternative exercises for adaptation, including progressions and regressions as appropriate. 

The purpose of exercises, how to break exercise/movements down to their component parts. 

How to develop client co-ordination by building exercises/movements up gradually. 

The importance of fitness advice and how to offer it in gym based physical activity. 

The importance/ methods of voice projection; effective use of volume and pitch of voice. 

The information that you must give to other people who are involved. 

The types of new hazards that may occur during a session and how to identify and manage these. 

Reporting procedures for health and safety.
