Module Aims
To provide students with an understanding of the fundamentals of mathematics required for studying mathematics at University.
Content Summary
Algebra: algebraic manipulation, simplification, expansion of brackets, factorisation, polynomials, indices and logs, permutations and combinations, functions, introduction to set theory.
Trigonometry: trigonometric ratios, solving triangles, sine and cosine rule, graphs of trigonometric functions, trigonometric identities, inverse trigonometric functions.
Calculus: introduction to differentiation and integration, the product rule, the quotient rule, the chain rule, stationary points, integration by parts, integration by substitution, basic differential equations.
Vectors and Matrices: basic vector and matrix concepts, vector addition, scalar and vector products, vector geometry, matrix algebra.
Advanced Topics in Mathematics: introduction to complex numbers, proof by contradiction, proof by induction, introduction to discrete mathematics.
