Module Aims
To introduce students to effective leadership concepts with practical application of the skills and knowledge required within contemporary sports organisations.
Explore the nature of leadership and the wide-ranging organisational factors that impact on leadership approaches
Debate differences between management and leadership and the role they play in sport.
Content Summary
The module will cover the following topics:
• Defining leadership and identifying its place within sport organisations
• Leadership traits, theories and styles
• The complexity of the leadership role
• Managing self and managing ‘up’
• Management and Leadership: Mutually exclusive or integrated?
• Effective communication, managing relationships and emotional intelligence
• Ineffective and destructive leadership
• Leadership techniques applied to resolve management challenges.
• Performance development plans and their impact; provide students with an opportunity to identify and evaluate strategic options.
• Effective communication and leading organisational change.
• High performing team and how can this be developed
• The role of delegation and empowerment in leadership
