Module Aims

To synthesise an in-depth knowledge and critical understanding of different types of pain, emphasising their clinical implications and practice.

Topics may include:

ISP taxonomy of different types of pain (including key differences between nociceptive, inflammatory and neuropathic pain).

Acute vs. chronic. Importance of early recognition and prevention of chronicity. Clinically important aspects of acute and chronic pain;

Cancer/Visceral (IASP10)

Headache/Neuropathic (IASP10)

Fibromyalgia/musculoskeletal (IASP 11)

Understanding of pain changes in the light of new evidence.
