Module Aims

Through a fictional case study this module will consider the professional event production business environment including safety aspects with a focus on practical theatrical rigging equipment and procedures. The module will study management and financial practices appropriate to small business, and explore the necessity for proper safety management and procedures with regard to the current safety legislation.

Content Summary

Business Part

Introduction to business, financial and general administration management for small business using lighting and event examples. Sources of funding. Legal obligations - market analysis, sales, competition - start up assistance.

Self employment - taxation, insurance, contracts and payment. the self employed business plan - financial planning, cash flow, accountancy and book keeping.

Practical business operation: quoting, invoicing and collecting payment.

Safety Part

Principles of Safety and primary requirements for health, safety and welfare in the workplace with particular consideration of event safety.

Safety Legislative Systems/ Enforcement

Health and Safety at Work Act 1974

Health and Safety Management Regulations 1999

Safety and safe methods of working including, definitions of risk and hazard, risk assessment, and safety procedures, records and audit

Application specific safety issues supported by statutory and advisory documents from HSE; Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 - BS7671.

Also including other application relevant primary/secondary legislation which may include PUWER, LOLER. CoSHH, safety in the work place, fall arrest and prevention, protective clothing, working at height etc

Rigging Part

Introduction to rigging equipment and terminology used within the live event industry.

The safe and appropriate use of access equipment including ladders, towers etc

The use of manual equipment including preparation, methods of attachment.

Rigging methods.

Safe working loads of rigging accessories and their compatibility. Calculation of loads and forces
