Module Aims

To provide the student with the ability to analyse complex mechanical and control systems

Content Summary

The module is divided in two parts: Mechanics and Control

The following topics are covered in Mechanics:

- Power Transmission systems that will include analysis of: gear systems; epicyclic gears; belts; clutches

- Torsion of circular and non-circular sections

- Vibrations of multiple degrees of freedom systems

- Friction-based devices and geared systems

- Statically indeterminate systems

The following topics are covered in Control:

- Frequency domain: Bode, Nichols and Nyquist domain analysis and synthesis, frequency domain compensation design.

- s-plane: Root locus and root contour analysis and synthesis, including the Rules of Evans.

- z-plane: Sample data systems, ADDA, z and pulse transforms, digital controllers.

- Gain scheduling adaptive control in s and z-planes.
