Module Aims

• To provide an opportunity for students to understand the contribution study skills can make to academic progress.
• To produce written work which is well-organised; relevant, makes use of appropriate terminology and is academic in style.
• Reflective upon practice to develop learners’ ability to provide effective support using various strategies appropriate to individual settings.

Content Summary

• The role of study skills in academic development
• Literature searches using the institutional libraries and Internet information highways.
• Strategies for effective reading and note taking
• Effective strategies for planning, structuring and presenting assignments.
• Appraising research reports
• Organising and storing notes (including electronic storage) and using drafting and editing techniques.
• Referencing and plagiarism
• Accurate use of the conventions of the Harvard System ( NB University of South Wales guidelines)
• Understand the criteria in the assignment marking matrix
• Consider the theory and application of reflective practice
• Reflect upon planning and delivery within practice.
