Module Aims

To develop an understanding of the principles and role of computer and communications technology.

To be able to apply solutions to problems relating to computer systems architecture.

Content Summary

Introduction to instruction set needs and the fetch/execute cycle.

Computer system organisation overview: system components, processors, memory, types of storage.

Number systems and data representation.

Peripherals and file systems: input devices, output devices, and storage.

User view of operating systems.

Networks: physical and logical structures, addressing, layered network model, devices, media (wired and wireless), security and encryption, configuration and management.
