Module Aims

• To support students to critically examine the theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches which underpin the process of qualitative, quantitative and blended research.

• To support the critical evaluation by students of the research process, drawing on relevant research findings to impact positively on their professional practice.

• To support the deepening of students’ understanding and skills to enable them to carry out extended professional research.

• To critically evaluate research methodologies and their application to research in students’ own professional context.

Content Summary

1. Research approaches: the epistemological base of differing methodological approaches, for example positivist, transformative, interpretative, feminist..
2. Ethics and politics in research; preparing for presentations to Ethics Committees.
3. Research designs: for example: experiments, surveys, case studies, comparative research, grounded theory, action research, collaborative research.
4. Generating, analysing and evaluating data: for example: questionnaires, interviews, observation, measurement scales, sampling, innovative data collection methods’ reliability and validity
5. Documentary analysis, discourse analysis, qualitative data analysis.
6. Critical evaluation of published research across a range of professional contexts.

LO1 To critically analyse and evaluate theory, policy, processes and practice in relation to research methodology in order to generate new knowledge and understanding.
LO2 To plan their own primary or secondary research study recognising the ethical implications of their intended research and identifying the methodology and data collection instruments to be used.
