Module Aims

To develop a critical understanding of theory and practice relating to the design and evaluation of professional language learning materials for use in a range of contexts and with a range of learners.

To use investigative procedures to critically analyse the characteristics of effective language learning materials in order both to improve language learners’ experiences and to deepen their own engagement as practitioners.

To enhance students’ understanding of semiotic and discourse analysis to identify and compare the textual features and patterns of authentic texts and commercially produced materials.

To assess the potential of electronic media for materials development and incorporate digital learning into students’ production of materials

To enhance students’ awareness of the implications of materials design for second language acquisition and as well developing the ‘small culture’ of the classroom.

To demonstrate an in-depth knowledge and understanding of current national and international research and literature in relation to the design and evaluation of language learning materials

Content Summary

1 Historical overview of language learning materials in different contexts and their development

2 Activity Theory and its application to language learning resources

3. Frameworks for critical evaluation of materials

4. Theory and practice of use of digital materials, e-learning and blended learning.

5. Case studies of materials design, development and evaluation at micro- and macro levels

Assessment Criteria

Assessment Category Assessment Type Description Duration Word Count Weight (%) Best of? Pass Mark
Oral Assessment (CW) Presentation (CW) 1 Students will identify an area of language learning in which the quality of materials might be improved. They will design learning materials present these as a poster presentation to peers with oral commentary on design principles (1000 word equivalence/10 minutes). 10 N/A 30 No 40
Written Assignment (CW) Document Analysis (CW) 1 Analysis of two texts: one drawn from an authentic context and the other from commercially produced language teaching materials. (1500 word equivalence) 0 1500 40 No 40
Written Assignment (CW) Bibliography (CW) An annotated bibliography of the research and literature that played a critical role in the design of their poster presentation. (1000 word equivalence) 0 1000 30 No 40
