Module Aims

To support students in developing a critical understanding of the construction of childhood in contemporary society

To support students in developing a critical understanding of the concepts of risk and protective factors, vulnerability and resilience

To develop student’s knowledge of particular vulnerable groups such as asylum seekers and refugees looked after children, and children living with domestic violence.

To support students in developing a critical understanding of international and national legislation and policy relating to vulnerable groups

To use case studies to explore a range of approaches to working with vulnerable groups and where appropriate to reflect on their relevance and application to their own work contexts.

To support students in developing an understanding of effective partnership working with families and multi-agency collaboration.

To develop student’s ability to critically review national and international research relating to vulnerable groups

Content Summary

Childhood in the 21st Century

Definitions of vulnerability and resilience, risk factors and protective factors.

Political, economic, historical and social contexts in relation to vulnerable groups

Key theoretical and practical issues relating to a range of vulnerable groups.

Approaches to working with vulnerable groups

Legislation, policy and guidelines relating to working with Vulnerable Groups

Comparative and International research relating too vulnerable groups

Partnership working with children, families and other agencies.
