Module Aims

To enable critical reflection on the nature and characteristics of the relationship between digital technology, learning and teaching and the pedagogies associated with technology enhanced learning.

To enable students to evaluate current research, literature and theoretical frameworks relating to the acquisition of digital competence by teachers and learners.

To deepen students’ understanding of the ways in which digital competence can be developed and applied in the six areas of learning and experience:

To enable students to critically reflect on and evaluate the development of digital competence within their own practice and/or their institution and plan for improvement.

Content Summary

1. Definitions of digital competence and the set of knowledge, skills and attitudes of which it is comprised as well as frameworks for its development.

2. Critical understanding of the pedagogical knowledge and emerging theories regarding the use of learning technologies and their use to enhance learning in formal and informal contexts.

3. Identification and assessment of frameworks for the evaluation of digital competence and technology enhanced learning.

4. Analysis and evaluation of case studies of frameworks currently conceived and implemented to develop digital competence across the six areas of learning and experience.

5. Management and leadership: evaluation of the development of digital competence within the participant’s setting, to include:

Use of audit tools, data and evaluation to track and monitor needs and progress;

Identification of an individual or institutional professional strategy, including evaluation, a policy and action plan, where appropriate.
