To introduce the concepts of health and wellbeing and to assess the key concepts underpinning health and social care knowledge and practice.

To introduce the basic concepts of epidemiology and their application to the study of and practice within health and social care.

Defining public health – public heath as ‘everyone’s business’

Concepts of health, wellbeing, illness and disease

Perceptions of health, well being and disease – lay vs professional

Influences on health, inequalities in heath and determinants of health

Models of health

Individual vs population approach

Introduction to promoting and improving health

Introduction to epidemiology

Measures of health and disease frequency

Introduction to health surveillance & protection form risks posed by the environment, including sustainability and health

Understanding and interpreting health data

The role of wider settings in improving health and wellbeing – housing, environment, social services, drug and alcohol etc.

Introduction to the role of health and social care services in health and wellbeing, including organisation of services.
